Presidential candidate Heather Humphreys says what the O’Farrell family have gone through is absolutely awful.
23-year-old Shane O’Farrell was killed while out cycling near his home in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, on the 2nd of August 2011.
The driver of the car that killed Mr O’Farrell was Zigimantas Gridziuska who a string of previous convictions, including offences for road traffic incidents, theft and drugs
Gridziuska left the scene before later handing himself into gardaí.
A public apology was issued to the O’Farrell family in May of this year after 14 years of campaigning for the state to officially recognise the injustices that has been brought upon the Co Monaghan family.
Speaking on the week in politics presidential debate on RTE One, Heather Humphreys said the public apology that was received in recent months was the right thing and she welcomed that apology.
The former local minister and TD said she often thinks on a regular basis about the O’Farrell family and what they have went through over the years.
Shane O’Farrell’s mother Lucia said in recent weeks that Ms Humphreys never voted to support the calls for a public inquiry over the years and the Carrickmacross woman has been critical of her lack of support during the years as a local representative in Cavan and Monaghan.
