"Women and families in Monaghan deserve better when it comes to healthcare."
That's according to local councillor Sinead Flynn.
During this month's sitting of Monaghan County Council, the Sinn Fein representative highlighted revelations from CervicalCheck that over 1,000 biopsy samples at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda were being re-examined.
This was after women referred through CervicalCheck were given the wrong pre-cancerous grading, some too low, some too high.
Cllr Flynn also referenced the BreastCheck scandal.
It was revealed also last week that in 2024 the target was 195,000 screenings, yet only 137,000 women were screened, resulting in nearly 50,000 women who were left without life-saving checks.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Flynn said we cannot be messing with women's lives: "This is not a business where you cut corners to keep costs down. This is women's health. A mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, these are the people being failed. It is scandalous, and it must be brought to the fore immediately.
"If the Minister, the Department of Health, the HSE, and this government cannot get a grip on these scandals, then they should step aside and let someone capable of fixing this broken system do so."
