Listen Back: Adequate support ‘crucial’ for those impacted at Wellman
Adequate support ‘crucial’ for those impacted at Wellman. On the 3rd of June, Wellman International Ireland sought the protection of the courts through examinership for its operation in Mullagh, Co. Cavan. This was to allow time to seek a buyer or investor for the business.

Yesterday, the court-appointed Examiner has informed staff that 50 positions will be lost, pending High Court approval.

Minister Niamh Smyth says her immediate thoughts are with the workers and their families in Mullagh; and the surrounding communities.

Furthermore, she said this is a worrying and uncertain time for many households. Moreover, she wanted to assure everyone affected that you are not facing it alone.

Indeed, the local minister says the examinership process is still ongoing.  Any final decisions rest with the High Court; adding that in the meantime, IDA Ireland remains fully engaged with the Examiner; and I have instructed my Department to keep Wellman International at the very top of their agenda. Minister Smyth joined Ronan Gargan on the Wider View to discuss this important issue further.
