Listen Back: Calls for dedicated quiet regulation spaces locally

A local councillor has called on Cavan County Council to provide dedicated quiet regulation spaces within County Cavan's towns for neurodivergent individuals.

In Ireland, recent national survey data suggests that approximately 1 in 10 adults identify as neurodivergent, encompassing autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and other neurological differences.

Cllr Niamh Brady said autism prevalence among children has also increased significantly in recent years and the figures indicate that a substantial number of individuals and families in our community are directly affected.

Many neurodivergent people can find busy public environments overwhelming due to noise, lighting, and crowd levels.

Cllr Brady said while Cavan Town offers many valuable social and community opportunities, the lack of a calm and sensory space can unintentionally limit participation for people in our community. She joined Ronan Gargan on the Wider View.
