Calls for Marcus Daly exhibition Cavan County Museum. A local councillor is calling for an exhibition space in Cavan County Museum to remember Marcus Daly.
The Ballyjamesduff man was born in Derrylea just outside the town in 1841.
At the age of 15, Daly immigrated from Cavan and set out for New York; where he delivered telegraph messages and worked as a dock labourer. At the age of 20, he went to California; working as a farmhand and gardener, but most notably where he worked as a miner.
He went on to become an owner of multiple mines in Nevada and Montana, he even founded banks, hotels, and racetracks. Cllr Trevor Smith spoke to Ronan Gargan about what he believes this exhibition would pay tribute to a man that left Ballyjamesduff and would achieve so much in his lifetime and beyond.
