Listen Back: Local fire chief issues Christmas safety message. Monaghan's Chief Fire Officer, Dermot Brannigan; advises locals to ensure they have a working fire alarm in place this Christmas.
Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound, Mr Brannigan said that a fire alarm is the only method of early detection; should a fire break out.
Additionally, with an increase in households set to light fires at home; over the festive period; Mr Brannigan also encourages people to clean their chimneys and ensure that you have a fire guard.
According to the local fire officer; it is "important" for households to ensure they are not exposed to a chimney fire.
Moreover, he points out that at this time of the year, electrical appliances are often overloaded; so it's important to "turn off and plug out" when not in use.
