Special classroom for 12 schools across Cavan and Monaghan will be delivered over the summer in time for the new academic year. There will be six new classrooms in each Cavan and Monaghan by September. Each one will cater for six pupils and run by one teacher and one special needs assistant.
Across the country, 375 new special classes will be delivered in September for around 2,300 children with additional educational needs. Welcoming the announcement from the Department of Education, Cavan-Monaghan TD Brendan Smith said the classrooms are welcomed because they are needed: "It's extremely important that children with additional needs get the adequate support in school they need, that these special classes are available with the requisite staff as well" Deputy Smith told Northern Sound, "Since 2020, Minister Norma Foley has made a huge effort to increase the number of classes and ensure that children with those additional needs are in the proper educational setting. So these are welcome decisions by the minister."
