It's really hard to put into words the tragedy that has hit the county.

The two girls who were killed in yesterday's accident outside Clones were on their way to Largy College's school debs. The single vehicle collision happened on the N54 in Legnakelly on the Clones to Smithboro Road just before 7pm.

The driver of the car - a man in his 60s - is in a critical condition in hospital in Belfast. An 18-year-old girl is in a serious condition in hospital in Cavan, while a boy who's also 18, is being treated for less serious injuries.

Caothairleach of Monaghan County Council, Cllr David Maxwell, says the scale of the tragedy is hard to put into words. "They were on their way to a Debs in Monaghan from Largy College in Clones. The whole town of Clones and indeed Co Monaghan is devastated. It's really hard to put into words the tragedy that has hit the county," he added.
