241 unemployed people in Cavan and Monaghan have had their social welfare payments reduced for failing to engage fully with services helping them, back into jobs. 149 of those were in Cavan, an increase from 32 in 2023. 92 were on the reduced rate in Monaghan last year. up from 26 the year before.
Reduced rates of social welfare were introduced in 2011 as a means of encouraging jobseekers to fully engage with efforts of the Department to assist them in securing employment.
When a person, without good cause, fails to engage with the Intreo Employment Service, the case is referred to the local Intreo Employment Service office. Nationally, the number of people on a lower rate of social welfare almost doubled from 5,235 to 10,232 year on year.
