2,700 charged for mobile driving locally in 3 year period

Across Monaghan, Cavan and Louth, there were 771 notices issued by Gardaí in 2022.

There was 2,700 fixed charge notices issued for driving while holding a mobile phone across the Northern Sound region between 2022 and 2024.

Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act 2006 prohibits holding a mobile phone while driving, a mechanically propelled vehicle in a public place.

The figures were released by the Minister for Justice, Jim O'Callaghan, in response to a parliamentary question by Fianna Fáil TD, John Connolly.

Across Monaghan, Cavan and Louth, there were 771 notices issued by Gardaí in 2022.

This increased by 118, to 889, in 2023.

In 2024, there was 1,040 fixed charge notices issued in the region by members of An Garda Síochána.

Nationally, there was 18,609 notices issued in 2022.

Meanwhile, in 2023 the figure was just over 19,000 notices, and climbed to 21,888 in 2024.

In total, there was 59,603 fixed charge notices issued by Gardaí between 2022 and 2024.
