35,000 people across Cavan and Monaghan will receive over €8.25m in the Christmas Bonus payment this month.
The Bonus is paid to long-term social welfare recipients including pensioners, carers, people with disabilities and lone parents.
Earlier this year, Minister for Social Protection, Heather Humphreys announced changes to the criteria meaning up to 1.4 million people will receive the 100% Christmas Bonus in 2021.
“This important support will benefit 35,000 people in Cavan and Monaghan at what can be a very expensive time of year,” the Minister added.
“We are talking about our carers, our pensioners, lone parents, people with disabilities and people in receipt of jobseeker’s payments.
“I want to once again take this opportunity to urge people to spend their Christmas Bonus in their local community.
“As a former Minister for Business, I know that our retail community is still feeling the impact of Covid-19.
“These past two years has been so difficult for our small and medium businesses. By spending the Christmas Bonus locally, we are supporting small retailers and supporting jobs.
“If we keep our business in our towns, we will keep our towns in business.”
