A conference entitled ‘Time for Irish Unity?’ took place at the Garage Theatre in Monaghan on Saturday.

Organised by Sinn Fein’s Matt Carthy, the event aimed to start a conversation on a united Ireland and build on all that has been achieved since the signing of The Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

The Agreement celebrates its 25th anniversary this week.

Meanwhile, Deputy Carthy said a united Ireland was now "a very real prospect".

He added that a citizens assembly needed to be established to move the matter forward.

"I come at this from the starting point that a united Ireland will be a better place economically, politically and socially," the local TD continued.

"If you believe that something is in the best interest of the people you represent, not only do you have a right but you have an obligation to pursue that.

"So I think this conversation is really important.

"I am delighted with the turnout and by the proactive engagement from those who did turn out."

Party Leader Mary Lou McDonald also spoke at the event.

She pointed to the importance of people from all "experiences" participating in discussions on Irish unity.

She said that it is important now to acknowledge the real hurt that was endured because of partition and also what Ireland has been through, collectively.

"I think we will never do too much or too many of these types of encounters," added Deputy McDonald.

"I hope increasingly that these meetings become a place where people from all sorts of experiences will come forward.

"Change is happening now; this isn't a romantic notion of the fourth green field.
