Former local Minister Heather Humphreys has confirmed that she will not seek her party's nomination for this year's presidential election.
The former Cavan-Monaghan TD told the Joe Finnegan Show earlier today that she had gave it serious consideration but she is not putting herself forward for the same reasons she opted not to contest last year's general election.
She said she wanted to spend more time with family and friends, and she wanted to do other things. The former Fine Gael minister shocked many last October when she decided that she would hang her political boots.
Speculation surrounding a bid at the Áras for the Aghabog woman was heightened last month when she told Northern Sound that she was not ruling out a bid for the highest office in the country. Former EU Commissioner and Vice President of the European Parliament Mairead McGuinness has now emerged as the firm front-runner to get the Fine Gael nomination.
The former Cavan Monaghan TD said she would back whoever is the Fine Gael candidate, but said that Ms McGuinness would have her full support. Heather Humphreys says after a lot of consideration, she has decided that a bid for the Áras was not the right move for her.
