A local TD has welcomed plans from the HSE to redevelop parts of Monaghan Hospital.
The plans would see a part of the hospital redeveloped to provide support to families of palliative care patients.
Speaking to Northern Sound this afternoon, local TD Cathy Bennett welcomed the news.
Last month, the Sinn Féin TD had called for Monaghan Hospital to become "fully operational".
In July 2009, the hospital reverted to a day facility.
Deputy Bennett said that the people of Monaghan have never forgiven the government for that.
"It is something I have kept high on my agenda since I was elected as a TD, and as a councillor before that.
"In 2009 Fianna Fáil closed our hospital in Co. Monaghan. It was something that the people of Monaghan never got over. We want it back, and fully operational.
"We know the ongoing issue with Cavan Hospital, it is overloaded with people coming from Cavan to Monaghan.
"We want to help out, and ensure that there is a hospital here in Monaghan," she added.
