A Co. Cavan based man has outlined his experiences of being attacked by a dog.
Gerard Smith was out walking after Christmas when he was bitten by a dog.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Gerard outlined his experiences with the dog.
He said that there was something in the way looked at him that let him know he was "in trouble."
Gerard explained how he reacted the incident.
He said: "It is important to make no eye contact, to look away from them, and to stand sideways.
"Curl your fingers into fists, not to hit them, but to protect your fingers because they tend to go for hands. Then I spoke really calmly to it saying, 'good dog, good dog, I'm ok', and I just allowed it to smell me.
"But no, he took a dislike to me," Gerard added.
After the incident, Mr. Smith said he continued walking forward, but that the bite had drawn blood.
Gerard was helped by Alistair, a young man from Co. Monaghan who brought Gerard into his tractor.
Also speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Alistair explained what happened when he picked Gerard up.
Alaister said: "I was thinking there was something wrong, I could see he was limping. I just knew there was something not right with him.
"He seemed sore, you'd know he was nervous of what happened, I knew straight away he had to go and get the injection," Alaister added.
