Cllr Shane P O'Reilly says there are potholes on roads now where there never was a pothole before.

Members of the Ballyjamesduff Municipal District have agreed to write to the Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan over the 'poor condition' of the roads in west Cavan.

The move follows a lively discussion at a recent meeting over the deterioration of local and by-roads across the municipal district, after heavy rainfall and snow over the winter months.

He highlighted how numerous governments have engaged in a "chronic underspend" on the maintenance and upkeep of rural roads.

Cllr O'Reilly added that money being pumped into outdoor infrastructure is coming at a high prices because it's to the detriment of rural roads.

"We have seen hundreds or millions of Euro spent on Greeways and Blueways. And yes, they are very important pieces of infrastructure for tourism, etc.
But sometimes we need to look a little bit closer to home and to those who are trying to go about their daily business; trying to get to school; trying to get to work; those in haulage and agriculture companies.

"And if the road network is not able to support and sustain those who need it then perhaps it's time to stand back and take stock of what we should be spending our money on," said Cllr O'Reilly.
