A Cavan farming family has been announced as this year’s winner of the 2024 RDS Teagasc Farm Forestry Award.
Derek and Yvonne McCabe were presented with their award in Dublin by Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Senator Pippa Hackett and Professor Frank O’Mara, Director of Teagasc. Farming in Mountnugent, Derek is a beef farmer and forest owner. Derek also breeds Irish Draught Horses and he also owns 70 hectares of forest, which he manages himself. In addition to his farming and forest enterprises, in recent years Derek has used his forestry experiences to develop a firewood and fencing business.
He also believes strongly in getting forestry and knowledge of woodlands into schools across the country.
