The Cavan farmer says regulation is in place but enforcement needs to be implemented.

A Cavan Dairy farmer has strongly condemned the practices that were seen on a special RTE Prime Time Investigates programme that was aired last night.

The programme entitled 'Milking It: Dairy's Dirty Secret' showed scenes of animal cruelty at several marts across the country.

Fran McNulty who began his career at ShannonSide Northern Sound also revealed in the programme that there was several issues when it came to the exporting of calves out of the country.

In one situation where Prime Time followed a truck travelling to Barcelona the calves received minimal breaks and were not rested for the mandatory periods under EU regulations. Driver time limits were also breached.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show earlier Raymond Brady who is a member of the IFA Dairy Committee says he believes that this does not reflect the 99.9% of people involved in the sector and how calves are treated.

The Cavan farmer says regulation is in place but enforcement needs to be implemented to prevent scenes like what was witnessed on footage broadcasted on RTE last night ever happening again.
