'After I had the operation I was a new man'

A Co Cavan man is holding a fundraising walk to raise funds for the oncology unit at the Mater Hospital after he underwent successful surgery to remove cancer at the facility. Phil Smith from Lavey was diagnosed with cancer of the jaw in 2021 and on the 19th of November he is hosting the fundraiser at the New Inns GAA Grounds from 12-3pm.

After Phil got over the initial shock of his diagnosis he had surgery to remove part of the cancerous bone under the supervision of Dr Fergal Duffy. Bone and skin from his leg was then used to replace and graft his jaw.

Phil hasn't looked back since then and he says he is raising the funds for the oncology unit at the Mater Hospital to "give back a little" for all the help and support he received during his illness.

"After I had the operation I was a new man. That is thanks to the good help I got at the hospital, they were a great help to me," he added.
