A Cavan author has been reacting to concerns about the decline of hitchhiking in Ireland.
Ruairí McKiernan, author of Hitching for Hope, says he understands why many drivers may be hesitant to give strangers a lift.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show, he said safety concerns and insurance issues have changed attitudes towards hitchhiking over the years.

He said that hitchhiking attitudes have changed massively over the years, with a fear of the stranger developing for a lot of people.
Ruari encouraged people not to lose faith in every stranger, noting it's a judgment call.
