Paul Lynch, the chairperson of the Cavan Tidy towns group says the news for Cavan is disappointing but he sees it as a challenge.

Cavan has been ranked 'moderately littered' in a new report out in recent days by business group Irish Business Against Litter.

While there were a couple of seriously littered sites, it was the low number of top-ranking sites which brought down Cavan’s performance in the league. On a positive note, the An Taisce report found the Main Street was very much deserving of the top litter grade this time around. the report stated if some of the moderately littered sites could improve, it
could make a big difference, overall.

The report also highlighted care needs to be taken at the residential area of Ardkeen – much of it was maintained very well and clear of litter but there was one isolated area which has been subject to dumping. Locally Monaghan ranked very well in 7th place out of the 40 while Cavan didn't do as well moving to 29th place, a massive decrease from being in 6th place 12 months ago.

He said over the coming months volunteers will be out cleaning up the areas highlighted in the report adding that there was also an onus on locals to take responsibility for their own litter.
