The figures gathered by the CSO last yea show major increases in adults staying in the family home.

Co Cavan has the highest number of adults living with their parents across the region according to new figures, meanwhile, close to 30,000 adults in the Shannonside Northern Sound Region were living with their parents in 2022.

The figures, gathered by the CSO last year, show major increases in adults staying in the family home last year compared to the 2016 census. The Housing Crisis, increasing rents and the high cost of living have seen thousands of adults stay living with or move back in with their parents.

Cavan has the highest number locally, with 8,455 adults living in the family home, up almost 20 percent on 2016. That's followed by Monaghan, where a jump of 7 percent in the last 6 years now sees 7,072 people living with their parents.

Roscommon comes next with 6,863 adults still at home, up close to 1,000 on the previous census. Meanwhile Longford and Leitrim have both seen 12 percent increases since
2016, with 4,245 and 3,195 people over the age of 18, respectively, living with parents or guardians.

Of these figures from the region, 1,513 are unpaid full time carers for members of the family.

Nationally, over half a million adults remain living with their parents for a number of reasons, including skyrocketing rents and house prices, accommodation availability and cost of living increases.
