A fundraiser has been set up to raise funds to help animals and their carers in Ukraine relocate to Ireland.

Joan's Animal Rescue Centre in Cavan is hoping to relocate animals from a shelter in war-torn Ukraine.

A GoFundMe campaign which was set up by a Ukrainian national from Kyiv to raise funds and help relocate animals and carers to Ireland caught the attention of local woman Joan Emin.

As a result, Joan has now teamed up with 'Victoria Sia', an animal shelter in Ukraine to relocate 7 dogs and 35 cats, as well as their dedicated carer Alex to Cavan.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Joan said she understands the day-to-day challenges of running a shelter, and can't imagine how difficult it would be to so while living in a warzone.

Joan went on to describe the current situation as 'absolutely heart-breaking', with carers in Ukraine willing to 'die' rather than leave their animals:
