It's thought temperatures could break previous records this week after 39 degrees Celsius was recorded on the continent.

Record high temperatures are being forecast in southern Europe this week. There have already been major wildfires on the Spanish island of La Palma and it is feared there could be more.

In the coming days parts of Italy and Greece could push the 48-point-8 degrees Celsius recorded in Sicily in August 2021, the highest temperature ever recorded in Europe.

Cavan resident and Shannonside Northern Sound presenter Declan Traynor is currently on his holidays in Eastern Italy.

Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show in relation to the recent weather warnings, the local presenter said holiday-makers like himself are being "extremely careful."

He added that some parts of Italy are expected to reach over 40 degrees by mid-week, with MET services issuing weather warnings and advice.

"You still have to be careful, especially when it comes to the sun," explained Declan. "Last night we happened to go down to a local shop, we were standing still and the sweat was still rolling down us at nine or ten o'clock at night. It's definitely unusual and completely different to the weather we left behind us in Dublin on Saturday."
