It's an important tradition and one that should be taught to youngsters in school.

Over the last 40 years, Patricia Cooney from Ardlougher in Co Cavan has marked the first day of February by making and selling St Brigid crosses. With all proceeds going towards the charity 'sightsavers', Patricia says there is 'no better way' to honour the legacy of St Brigid than offering a helping hand to those in need.

It's a tradition that holds such a special place in her heart and is one that began way back when she was in national school. Speaking to Northern Sound, Patricia said that she made the crosses for many years for her neighbours and friends.

She added it's an important tradition and one that should be taught to youngsters in school.
