Alanna Kells from Milltown was in the middle of planning for her wedding alongside completing her PHD when she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at the age of just 27.
Alanna who is now 28 had no family history or genetic mutations when she received her diagnosis after discovering a lump when she was lying down. Speaking to Northern Sound, Alanna said she as feeling tired for a full year prior to her diagnosis, however when she went to the doctors her blood test results all came back clear.
The 28-year-old said she always checked her breasts regularly when standing up, however it wasn't until she was lying down when examining herself that she discovered a lump.
The local woman said it's important for women to regularly check their breasts, particularly when it comes to early intervention and called for the age for breast screenings to be lowered.
As well as this, Alanna is hoping to bring about much needed change when it comes to cancer patients who are in full-time study.
Alanna explained because her PhD was funded through a tax-free scholarship, she is not eligible for PRSI-based social welfare payments.
She is currently in the process of applying for disability supports, but in the meantime there are many day-to-day costs that come with cancer treatment.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Alanna said it's important for her to share her story in order to bring about important changes that are needed:
As well as sharing her story through her TikTok channel 'alanna4330' on social media, Alanna created a gofundme page.
All proceeds from the fundraiser will help support Alanna through her cancer diagnosis. Speaking to Northern Sound, Alanna said the support she has received so far has had a "massive impact."
