A local councillor has raised her concerns about a recent announcement increasing the maximum age for certain school transport drivers from 70 to 72 on a trial basis.
Cllr Sinead Flynn says while any effort to address driver shortages is welcome, this change is very limited.
While most school buses particularly in rural areas carry 22 to 26 children or more, Cllr Flynn warned that the new scheme only applies to smaller vehicles carrying up to eight passengers.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Flynn said there is no change for those drivers, so this will do little to address the real shortages.
