A local councillor has called for a community-led approach to the bioeconomy transition, as the roll-out of Anaerobic Digestors is set to continue in County Cavan.
Sinn Féin's Stiofán Conaty says that many people in many towns around the county, including Cootehill, are very worried, with 7 towns in Cavan earmarked by Gas Networks Ireland for anaerobic digestion facilities in the coming years.
Speaking at Monday's meeting of Cavan County Council, Cllr Conaty outlined the potential benefits of biomethane production in general, while also challenging the Government to explain why planning guidelines for anaerobic digestion facilities were not included in the National Biomethane Strategy.
Cllr Conaty believes that before these facilities are rolled out en-masse, a robust national planning framework must be in place to determine the most suitable locations.
Speaking to Northern Sound, the local councillor sharply criticised the lack of consultation with the local community in Cootehill on this issue said that if the bio-economy transition is going to be successful.
