"Dark cloud over Fermanagh" following fatal Maguiresbridge incident

This is a remote, quiet, rural area.

A community is in shock following the confirmation that two people have died in an incident in Maguiresbridge.

The shooting incident happened this morning in Maguiresbridge, about 12 kilometres from Enniskillen.

Police and other emergency services were called here to the Drummeer Road area shortly before 8.30 this morning.

This is a remote, quiet, rural area, where there's still a heavy police presence, with a large cordon in place. Full details are still emerging, but police have confirmed two people are dead and another two have been seriously hurt, one of which was airlifted to hospital. Police says there's no ongoing risk to the public. Local politicians are asking people not to speculate on social media, as investigations continue.

William Smith from Fermanagh based newspaper the impartial reporter was at the scene all morning and he has been giving me the latest information on this incident.

“This is a shocking incident that has rocked the local community to its core. There was speculation early this morning that a shooting incident had taken place.

“I attended the scene, which was in a very rural area, and there the police, ambulance and the Northern Ireland air ambulance were in attendance. It was around two hours later, police confirmed that two people had died, and two other people had been seriously injured.

“The shooting happened in a very quiet rural area, an incident like this, is truly unheard of  and it's rocked the community to its core. There is a dark cloud over the Fermanagh today following the news that’s emerging.”

Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill said she is "absolutely heartbroken by the news from Maguiresbridge". In a post on X, she said she has no doubt the community will come together and "support one another through this incredibly difficult time"
