People are being urged to discuss organ donation with their friends and family.
Organ Donor Awareness week kicks off today as almost 600 people are on waiting lists for transplants here in Ireland.
Carol Moore - Chief Executive of the Irish Kidney Association - says its important that people's wishes about organ donation are known.
"Talking about it to family and friends is important," she continued.
"Also carrying the reminder on their person.
"This means that in the unlikely event they arrive at a situation, a family will be able to make what is a very difficult decision at a very difficult time."
