This was a massive increase on the 382 admitted during the previous year.

513 dogs were admitted to the Monaghan County Council Dog Pound last year.

According to Helen Hewittt from Carrick Dog shelter who operates the local pound to date this year the numbers are ahead when compared to the same time last year.

This was a massive increase on the 382 admitted during the previous year and almost 3 times the number of dogs admitted in 2021. Almost half of the dogs admitted to the Dog Pound in 2023 were surrendered by their owners.

Helen says this a very unfortunate trend that is continuing, and it is leaving a major stretch on the facility. She says it's becoming very difficult to find homes for the numbers that are coming to Monaghan pound.
