The total value of defective imported cars driving around Cavan and Monaghan is €40m.
This is according to Shane Teskey of www.motorcheck.ie who spoke to the Wider View this afternoon .
The company has carried out the first major cross border analysis of salvage and written-off vehicles being imported into the Republic of Ireland from the UK.
www.motorcheck.ie discovered 39,000 affected vehicles for sale privately or on the forecourts of garages - all of which come with a clean bill of health.
However, this is not the case and Mr Teskey says he was shocked by what the company uncovered.
He added that the total value of defective cars driving around the ROI right now is €318m.
"There are a number of factors at play," Mr Teskey continued.
"Back in a normal market when used cars were in plentiful supply, the biggest challenge we had was that Irish people tend to trust the seller more than their UK counterparts.
"In the UK most people will check a car's history independently before they buy it.
"Therefore, it is very hard for the scammers to get away with it in the UK.
"But in Ireland, the vast majority of people trust the person they are buying the car from."
