Extent of storm damage 'could of been avoided' says local business

Mr Farrelly says he "understand" why people are "frustrated" as a lot of the fallen trees could have been cut previous to the storm to minimise damage.

A local restaurant in Mullagh has stepped in to provide its services for those without power and water as a result of Storm Eowyn. Killian's Lodge owner Michael Farrelly has been using a generator and his own well to stay open for members of the public as the parish centre remains without power and water.

Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, the local business man said the decision to assist people with their basic needs was nothing more than a good will gesture, without realising the volume of people that needed this facility. Mr Farrelly said he has been using his generator for the last 12 years, however it has been used more often in last few years due to storms becoming more frequent. With so much damage caused each time, Mr Farrelly believes that the extent of damage caused each time "could be avoided."

Speaking to Northern Sound, Mr Farrelly said; "The storms are becoming more frequent and there's awful damage done every time a storm comes and an awful lot it could be avoided. I can understand people's frustration and why they're annoyed, a lot of these trees could be cut down. It's a terrible situation and the extent of this storm was just crazy, we've never seen anything like it before."
