The family of a woman who lived in Co Cavan have spoken out at their horror over discovering via WhatsApp that she had secretly ended her life by assisted suicide in Switzerland.
When the family found out they were told that her ashes would be posted to them.
58-year-old, Maureen Slough, from Mullagh had told her family that she was going on holiday to Lithuania with a friend last month, but instead went to a Swiss assisted suicide clinic, to end her life.
According to her daughter, Megan Royal, Maureen had a successful working life after being promoted to the role of executive officer in the civil service before retiring last year.
Maureen’s daughter Megan said the first she knew that her mother had died was when a volunteer for the group sent her a WhatsApp message. Megan want's to highlight the way her family has been treated in an effort to make sure this does not happen to another family.
Maureen's daughter said she had lived in Mullagh for over 15 years and loved the area and loved the people of the community. She said the 58 year knew everyone and was friends with everyone. Megan says her family are devasted by the loss of their mother.
