There's been a sharp rise in a homophobic abuse towards members of the LGBT plus community across the region.
That's according to Sharon Casey who is a volunteer with Cavan & Monaghan Rainbow Youth which is an LGBTi+ youth project.
Sharon says there has been a marked increase in abuse towards members of the youth group especially in the past 12 months.
Speaking on the Wider View, a number of recent incidents of abuse was highlighted in Monaghan.
Sharon says the youth project in both Cavan and Monaghan offers young people a safe space which they don't have in other parts of their community.
Roisin who attends the youth group says abuse towards people like herself can be small but impactful.
Meanwhile, Bernadine Quinn is from Outcomers which is a social and befriending support group for gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender people in the North East.
She says there is a fear in areas like Cavan and Monaghan among the LGBT community and it's not right.
Bernadine says social media and the government have a major role to play in tackling this situation.
She says we all have a role to play in making people feel a part of the locality and not allow them to be afraid and fear their own community.
