Fears Monaghan poultry sector could be "squeezed" without new work permits

Last week the Government relaxed rules on recruiting workers from outside the European Economic Area.

There are fears the poultry sector in Monaghan could be squeezed if it doesn't get new work permits.

Last week the Government relaxed rules on recruiting workers from outside the European Economic Area.

Meat factories, hauilers, construction and some farm sectors are among those set to benefit.

However, poultry farms weren't included in the plans.

IFA Poultry Chair and Carrickmacross farmer Andy Boylan says these aren't "simple minimum wage jobs" that they are struggling to fill.

He told Shannonside Northern Sound that poultry is being forgotten about because it isn't spread across the country.
