In Cavan, 27 provisional licence holders have been disqualified with one licence surrendered as of the 31st of August this year.
In Monaghan, the number is 19 with no licences surrendered to the RSA in the same time period.
That's according to figures released by Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Sean Canney, in response to parliamentary questions put forward by Emer Currie.
In Cavan, 38 learner drivers received disqualifications in 2023, with three surrendering their licences to the RSA.
The number is slightly lower in 2024, with 25 disqualifications, and only one permit surrendered to the RSA.
In Monaghan, 2023 saw 20 drivers disqualified with no licences surrendered, while there were 15 learner drivers disqualified in 2024 with one licence surrendered.
A notification of disqualification is issued by the Courts Service for drivers convicted of a court disqualification, which includes the requirement to surrender the permit.
In his response, the Minister noted that an Garda Síochána have access to the NVDF as part of their Mobility Strategy and therefore can detect and prosecute a driver who continues to drive while disqualified.
This is the case whether a licence as been surrendered or not.
