Funding has been made available for six additional SEN rooms for the special school in Castleblayney.

That's according to Minister of State, Niamh Smyth, who welcomed the news this evening.

Minister of State Smyth said that the school is in its initial stages, so that it remains to be seen how many additional children the funding will cater for.

She explained that schools grow based on what the needs of the school are, and said that every effort is made to ensure that all facilities are provided for.

The Minister of State added that funding dedicates commitment to the school and to the pupils attending it.

She said: "For a long number of years there was a thinking in the Department of Education that all students should be integrated with their siblings in main stream schools.

"It became clear to me in recent years, that isn't the case for every student. For some students a specialised school is what's required. Not trying to force students into main stream, it's not always the most appropriate or useful setting for students," the Minister of State added.
