The works will include the installation of over 50 cattle drinkers and 5 kilometres of fencing along seven rivers in Cavan and Meath.

Funding of €185,000 has been allocated to a project to enhance biodiversity around Lough Sheelin.

The funding, announced under the Farm and Community Biodiversity Initiative, will also protect the Lough Sheelin catchment area from erosion by livestock and reduce water pollution.

The works will take place along seven rivers in Cavan and Meath, including at Finaway, Pound Lough, Mountnugent and Kildorrough.

The project will involve the installation of over 50 cattle drinkers and 5 kilometres of fencing along the rivers, and is expected to be completed within 12 months.

Inland Fisheries Ireland say the works will lead to the growth of vegetation on river banks, which will become a natural habitat for wildlife and act as a buffer to prevent polluted water from entering the rivers.
