There is a worsening shortage of GPs, particularly in western region and commuter counties like Cavan and Monaghan.
That's according to new analysis from the Irish College of General Practitioners which warns that 25% of GPs are nearing retirement.
Monaghan GP Dr Illona Duffy said some younger doctors don't want the headache of running their own business, preferring positions with salaries.
She added that it becoming abigger issue as Ireland experiences population increases.
The number of doctors being trained has increased but it not reflected in the number of GPs.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning, Dr Duffy outlined the importance of GPs.
