A government TD's described a ballot on confidence in the Garda commissioner as 'unhelpful'. The Garda Representative Association is pressing ahead with a vote , after failing to resolve differences over rosters.
Fianna Fail TD Niamh Smyth is encouraging talks to deal with the issue. "I would of felt that his view of policing and Gardaí would be what was spoken about, getting Gardaí into the community and reopening small rural Garda stations which I think is what communities actually really need," explained Deputy Smyth.
"I always believe that something that is divisive - which this is - is unhelpful and sitting down and talking is much more affective. "
