It’s beginning to look more and more likely that former minister Heather Humphreys is to enter the race to become the next president of Ireland.
Northern Sound FM understands she is considering a bid following the shock announcement by Mairead McGuinness to leave the race on health grounds yesterday afternoon.
Northern Sound FM understands at least one senior minister from Fine Gael has met with the former Cavan Monaghan TD tonight in Co Monaghan to discuss the prospect of her putting her name on the ballot paper.
Ms Humphreys ruled out a bid for the Aras back at the end of May following a period of time considering the idea of putting her name in the hat for the job.
She announced last October that she would leave politics to enjoy retirement life with her family and friends but she has always been linked to a bid at the presidential race even when she was a minister prior to quitting political life.
She was elected to the Dáil in 2011 following a number of years as a Co Monaghan councillor prior to her elevation to Leinster House.
The Aghabog woman was appointed to her first Cabinet ministry in 2014 and then she was further elevated when she took the role of deputy Fine Gael leader when Simon Harris took the helm of the party 18 months ago.
The Fine Gael national executive is set to meet in the coming days to discuss the party’s next steps and things will be clearer if the former minister will be the candidate for Fine Gael.
