The health service is on track to give the one millionth dose of a Covid-19 vaccine today.

It comes as the head of the HSE says vaccines "are now protecting the most vulnerable" in nursing homes.

Paul Reid says in the latest round of mass testing of residents, fewer than a dozen tested positive out of over 16,000.

There have been nine further Covid-related deaths and 443 new cases of the disease - with the 5-day moving average down 15 percent on last week.

Locally in the northern sound region Cavan has crept up the table and now has the 7th highest incidence rate in the country at 200.9, after 8 cases were confirmed there yesterday.

However, Monaghan is 17th nationally.

There were 6 cases confirmed in the county yesterday leaving it with a rate of 89.6

However, Professor of infectious diseases, Jack Lambert, says the Government will struggle to meet its vaccine targets.
