Former Fine Gael Minister Heather Humphreys has confirmed she is giving serious consideration to running for the presidency.
It follows Mairead McGuinness’s withdrawal from the race on health grounds.
She spoke to the Sunday Independent ahead of a new Ireland Thinks poll, and puts her narrowly ahead at 19 per cent with Independent Catherine Connolly on 18 per cent.
Humphreys is said to be the preferred candidate of Tánaiste Simon Harris, with growing support from ministers and Independents.
MEP Seán Kelly is also reconsidering a run, but 62 per cent of voters say they would back neither.
