Heather Humphreys has refuted claims made by former minister, Shane Ross that she "doesn't have enough experience in political life" to carry out the role as President.
Speaking on LMFM earlier today, Mr Ross also went on to say that Ms Humphreys did not have the same fire in her belly for the job as she did while being a minister.
The former Cavan-Monaghan TD responded to these comments during a press conference at the National Ploughing Championships.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Heather Humphreys said: "I have plenty of fire in my belly. I have life experience, I was a manager in a Credit Union. I've experience as a minister, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht when I headed up the 2016 commemorations. That was great unifying force throughout the country and people felt a sense of pride.
"I was Minister for Business during Brexit and Covid, I represented Ireland on the world stage and went to boardrooms throughout the world and got business for this country and fought for jobs and I'm happy to do that again.
"I was also Minister for Social Protection were I was able to support people and understand the challenges and difficulties that many families face. Finally, as Minister for Rural and Community Development I travelled the length and breadth of this country. I know about community, I appreciate the work that's been done there and if I'm fortunate enough to get elected as President my theme will be community, unity and opportunity. Supporting communities, bringing people together and encouraging young people to grasp the opportunities.
"This country has made me what I am today and it has gave me everything that I have. I think I am a good example of someone who comes from a working farm to represent people and I can talk to them and relate to them."
