Positive litter survey results have been indicated for both Monaghan and Cavan.
The latest litter survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) shows both Monaghan and Cavan towns inside the top ten in the ranking of 40 cities and towns.
Monaghan has moved up to 2nd position, while Cavan, previously 19th, is up to 8th.
Sligo again topped the IBAL ranking, with Limerick City Centre as the only area branded 'littered'.
No town or city occupied the "seriously littered" or "litter blackspot" categories at the foot of the IBAL table.
Overall litter levels were on a par with last year, with 27 towns deemed clean.
The An Taisce report on Monaghan stated: This was the excellent result we have come to expect from Monaghan. Not only were the seven top ranking sites, but some which had been heavily littered in previous IBAL surveys had improved significantly e.g. Monaghan Business Park. Broad Road Car Park is a lovely town-centre car park environment with colourful bedding / planting. The waterside environment of Peter's Lake is just moments away from busy shopping environment - it's a million miles away from the hustle and bustle once you are by the lake.
The An Taisce report on Cavan stated: An excellent result for Cavan, with no very heavily littered sites this time around. With so many top ranking sites, there are a few which deserve a mention e.g. residential area of Drumnavanagh - very much deserving of the top litter grade; The Bring Centre and the Town Hall environs - the latter was particularly freshly presented and maintained, with all elements in very good condition.
