'Wintery showers are evident, particularly in the North and North West'

Icy stretches and patches of freezing fog are making driving conditions difficult for motorists across Cavan and Monaghan this morning.

Temperatures plunged to as low as minus 3 degrees Celsius overnight across the region. A Met Eireann cold weather alert is in effect until midday.

A status yellow warning applies across the country.  Alan O'Reilly, from Carlow Weather, says conditions are treacherous in places.
