Insulin Pump Therapy is to be delivered to children and young people at Cavan General Hospital in the coming months.
That's according to Cavan-Monaghan TD Pauline Tully, who is welcoming this development at the Cavan hospital.
The Sinn Féin TD has being reacting to an update from the RCSI Group, which runs Cavan General Hospital, that they plan to start the delivery of Insulin Pump Therapy by Quarter 3 of 2023. Insulin Pump Therapy prevents the need for daily insulin injections which can be very terrifying and stressful for children and young people.
Deputy Tully says currently for children and young people to avail of this therapy they are required to transfer their treatment to either Drogheda Hospital or Temple Street Hospital.
The local Td added that from Quarter 3 of this year children of all ages in the Cavan-Monaghan Hospital catchment area will have access to insulin pump therapy led by a Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist.
"I brought the issue up in the Dáil with the Minister for Health on a number of occasions and I also spoke with the Ministers private secretary".
"I'm delighted that sense has prevailed and children and young people in the constituency will no longer have to transfer their treatment away from Cavan and Monaghan Hospital to receive their insulin pump therapy."
"I believe that this will be of great benefit to children with Type 1 Diabetes."
