An inspection of child welfare services in Cavan and Monaghan has found issues with the vetting of staff.

HIQA carried out an inspection of the Child Protection and Welfare Service last November.

In its report it says Inspectors were concerned about the absence of appropriate vetting of staff, with no Garda or Police vetting for the previous five years in four of the 10 files reviewed.

However, the service was compliant or substantially compliant on the other categories inspected.

Children in the service overall had good experiences of it and the staff working in it.

One child said they could trust their social worker with what they say and they were helping with issues within their family.

Tusla has responded to the report saying the issues with vetting were “rectified within days of the inspection” and that it shows the “service was managed by a highly motivated management team” who had achieved a lot.
