Lack of supports for victims of sexual and domestic crimes criticised

There have long been calls for more supports locally, like a refuge.

Monaghan's Joint Policing Committee has been told that support services for victims of sexual crimes and domestic incidents need to be improved.

Members of the committee were yesterday told of the work of the Divisional Protective Services Unit which was set up within the Gardaí last July.

The unit is made up of seven Gardaí working in Virginia and Clones and is dealing with 137 active cases less than a year since it was set up.

Figures given at the meeting showed sexual offences have more than doubled in Monaghan alone year on year.

Presenting at yesterday's meeting, Detective Sergeant Rose McGirl praised the work of the Tearmann service locally but said there is a need to offer more supports and improve services in the region.
